Due to the nature of the beer making industry, Carbon Dioxide is constantly in the background of the working environment, where production takes place. Carbon Dioxide is poisonous to the human body in too high a quantity and therefore must be monitored. At the time, the Carlsberg Brewery in Northamptonshire didn’t have any monitoring system in place and therefore needed to install a system to do this. As the Carlsberg site is a food and drink company, the problem presented itself that anything installed had to meet the Health and Safety Hygiene requirements. A further problem anyone who fitted a new system would face would be that they had to undertake installation whilst production was going on – as Carlsberg Brewery couldn’t close down the site.
After nearly three months of discussions, the team at Total Protection UK proposed that a Site Wide Carbon Dioxide Detection System would need to be put in place to meet the requirements of the Carlsberg site. The system, designed from scratch by Total Protection UK, would consist of eight separate systems across the Carlsberg Brewery site, with approximately 130 sensors and would be able to log all CO2 leakage.
Turnkey solutions are something Total Protection UK is proud to offer. Turnkey solutions allow the team at Total Protection UK to not only design the Fixed Gas Detection System, but to also install, inspect and service every one of the systems they put in place. This was of course the case with the development at the Carlsberg Brewery. Due to the size and the importance of this system there were many challenges to overcome (because they had to meet so many different requirements), meaning that design itself took six months to perfect before both parties agreed. Once the design was in place, Total Protection UK employed a third-party installation team to install the Site Wide Carbon Dioxide Detection System. In most cases, our engineers would fit the system themselves, however on this occasion, due to the size and the fact that installation would take place whilst work continued onsite, the decision was made to save time. Although installation still took eight months.
From the initial enquiry, to the completion of the Site Wide Carbon Dioxide Detection System on site at the Carlsberg Brewery, the whole process took over two years to complete. However the benefits to Carlsberg will continue for many years:
