Portable Gas Detection has many different variations from single gas units, through to four, five, six and even seven gas configurations. The configuration is entirely dependent on your requirements, single gas options are generally available as either maintained or throw-away models and are usually available for toxic gases and oxygen monitoring. Multi-gas monitors are more specific and the most common monitor companies like Total Protection have available for sale and on their hire fleet is the four gas unit that detects for Methane (CH4), Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Oxygen (O2) this is the most widely used configuration for confined space entry, although it is imperative you know what gases you need to detect for. Multi-gas monitors can be configured to detect for a wide range of toxic gases including, Chlorine, Ammonia, Ozone and Nitric Acid, along with Infra-red sensors used for detection of Carbon Monoxide and Flammable Gases. Photoionization Detectors (PID) sensors are used for the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) and can measure in concentrations from sub parts per billion to 10,000 parts per million (ppm). PID monitors are usually configured within an internal pump to allow for remote sampling using a probe. Gas monitors are calibrated on a 6-monthly basis or after use if they become faulty and in-line with your company procedures. Portable gas monitors should be bump tested before use to ensure gas is reaching the sensor heads.
